They are so effective that they have even been made mandatory in some city councils, schools, kindergartens, and corporations in Australia. And many municipalities here in Arizona are going back and installing shade over their playgrounds.  Daycare facilities with outdoor play areas are required to provide shade for children. Shade Sail specifications:

An innovative, economical alternative to awnings and hard structures Shade Sails allow for air circulation over, under and in between the sails allowing the heat to escape and cooling breezes to flow through.

Shade Sails are made of high-density polyethylene shade cloth that is especially manufactured with tensioned fabric structures in mind. The knit is made using monofilament and tape filler.  Depending on color, the average shade rating is 90% and the UVR block is approximately 96%. We offer fabric that has been tested for flammability per ASTM requirements and has a rating of Class 1.  Today, most shade fabric manufacturers offer a 10 year warranty against sun degradation.  There is even one company in Australia that offers a 16 year warranty.

Sails can be attached to existing structures with custom made brackets and hardware. Southwest Shade Sails Inc uses quarter inch wall steel tubes embedded in concrete footings. The final size of the steel tube is determined through design and engineering specifications. Southwest Shade Sails Inc. offer a standard post that has been sand blasted and allowed to mix with the elements and naturally patina. Powder coating is available to help protect them and provide a desired color.

The footings are also engineered for each sail and its application depending on the size of the sail and the expected wind loading. Southwest Shade Sails Inc. includes rebar in every footing. Uplift is the main concern with shade sails and as a result, footings can be quite deep.
